TEAM CANADA 2000

The Canadian Women's National Ringette Team was announced Tues, 9 May, 2000.   The announcement came after a five day Final Selection Camp,   held in Winnipeg from May 3-7,   which saw 37 finalists vying for a spot on the National Team compete in exhibition games against teams from   Finland   and  the United States.   Click here to see Details and GAME Scores of the Final Selection Camp, 3 - 7 May, 2000 at the University of Manitoba

Gloucester Devils' Nadia Tomy and Alexis Snowden were two of the 22 players selected to Canada's National team that will participate in the Fifth World Championships to be held in Finland in November 2000. Former Devils Kim Stephenson of St John's, Nfld,  Megan Todd of Edmonton, and Nancy Blouin of  Gloucester were also chosen to represent our nation on Team Canada.   Two of the Coaches of Team Canada 2000 are from Gloucester,

Danielle Poirier   &   Lyndsay Wheelans.

Danielle

Danielle has played ringette for 25 years, winning a gold medal in 1998 as a player in the National Championships to go along with her Gold Medal Coaching victory in the 1999 Canada Games. In 1996,  Danielle was named Provincial Player of the Year  for the Ontario Ringette Association.

Lyndsay has been involved as a player and coach for 24 years, having both played on a World Championship team and later coached one. Well that doesn't tell the whole picture. She actually won 3 National Championships and 2 World Championships as a player. She has won a Provincial Championship and a Canada Games Gold Medal as a Coach. As well the team she helped coach to a Provincial Championship proceeded to and won the National Championship in 1999. Lindsay wasn't able to attend Nationals that year because of her job, but if you ask me that also makes her a National Championship coach as well. Lyndsay was Head Coach of Team Canada, winning the 1996 World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. And in 1998 was Head Coach  of Team Finland that defeated Team Canada in the "EuroTour 1998" Summit Series, 3 games to 2. The matches between the two world ringette powers, Canada and Finland, were held throughout Europe in Sweden, Finland, Germany and France.     Are you counting,   there have been four World Championships since it's inception in 1990 and one Summit Series...     Lindsay has four Championships in those five events.     Ohh by the way... She won a Bronze Medal as a player in the fifth event.

Nancy Blouin out to show she's among world's best

It's a good thing Nancy Blouin loves pressure, because in a few months she is going to face more of it than she ever has in her athletic career.

As one of three goalies chosen to play for Team Canada at the world ringette championships in Finland this November, Blouin will be the defending champions' last line of defence when Canada looks to retain its No. 1 standing in the sport it invented almost 40 years ago.   Blouin,   a 19-year veteran of the Gloucester Ringette Association, is comfortable playing just about any type of game. She proved that at the national team selection camp earlier this month in Winnipeg, where she faced the fewest shots of all six goalies at the tryout but also had the best save percentage.

Head Coach Deb Marak Says:

"Our National Team is made up of an extremely talented, dedicated and passionate group of players," said Deb Marek, Head Coach, Women's National Team. "Each player brings strong qualities to the team, both on and off the ice, and we feel that the group has what it takes to come together and represent Canada in future international competition."

The Women's National Team will now prepare for competition at the World Ringette Championships being held in Finland in November, with finals being held on November 15 and 18. All athletes will participate in an intense training program, including team building and mental training activities.
