History of Gloucester Ringette
(Updated: 10 April, 2002)
History of Cumberland Ringette Gloucester & Cumberland Merged into One Association 15 May 2002
Some Trivia to Start off the History lesson.
- Sam
Jacks who invented Ringette in 1963, also created the
game of Floor Hockey in 1936.
- Rules From 1963 to 1966.
- there were only two age groups. 14 and Under; and Over
14.
- only three players could play inside their own defensive blue
line. The three players allowed in a team's defensive zone included
the Goaltender. During the experimental 64/65 season, forwards
included the centers. They could play inside the offensive blue
lines. To designate positions, defence wore red ribbons, forwards
wore green ribbons; and change of ribbons, positions, and players
could only be made during a stoppage of play. In the First Rule
Book in 1965 this rule was changed to allow the center to go in
all three games. Stick colors replaced ribbons, Defence - Red, Forwards
- Yellow, Center's - White.
- In the 1965 Rule Book, Goaltender's sticks had to be painted
PINK.
- The Goal Keeper could not hold the ring out of play for longer
than 3 seconds.
- to start play on face offs the ring was placed on the ice between
two players. The players placed their sticks on the ice approximately
18 inches from the ring with play commencing when the whistle was
blown. They had to hit the ring to another player before they could
take possession of it themselves.
- To restart play after a violation, the ring was given to the
non offending team at the spot of the violation. A player of
the team in possession placed their stick in the ring, while the
opposition had to step back six feet. Play resumed with the
official's whistle.
- Length of play in the game was two periods of 20 minutes straight
time with a ten minute half time rest period.
1970
- In December of 1970 Lois Kemp asked Eleanor MacQuarrie,
Marlene Bradley, and Jane Kynnersley, all of Blackburn
Hamlet, to attend a clinic about ringette at Algonquin College,
with an on ice demonstration at Merivale Arena the next day. They
came home enthused, sending flyers to the schools in Blackburn.
They formed 2 teams of girls ages 9 and 10 to play at Blackburn
Public School on the outdoor ice. Edna Oliver & Marjorie
MacQuarrie joined the other ladies to help coach the first
two Gloucester Teams in existence. The first Ref's were
Fraser Oliver & Doug MacQuarrie. Look at how
we have grown. Doug grew up to Referee at Nationals and became
Ringette Canada's Technical Director. What happened to Lois? She's
still playing for the Blackburn Rockers! And, what happened to
Eleanor? If you watched the little Bunnies Play during the Gloucester
Tournament, look way up high in the stands... That woman way up
there in the back, being so quiet, watching our littlest darlings
with this huge grin. That's her!
1971
- Earl Armstrong Arena was Gloucester's second arena,
built in 1971. With this new ice surface, along
with Leitrim Arena (now the Fred Barrett Arena) which had
only been built in 1968, Gloucester Ringette moved indoors
and the formal association began the following year.
1972
- The Gloucester Ringette Association was formed in 1972.
Dick Potvin was the first Chairman
- In 1972 many games and almost all practices were held on outdoor
rinks in Gloucester.
- While the First Gloucester Invitational Tournament was not to
be held till four years later, Mini tournaments were held as far
back as April 1972.
1973
- Lois Kemp elected President of Gloucester Ringette in 1973.
- Lois was able to secure three (3) hours a week of indoor ice
from the Township for ringette games.
1974
- Ken Mitchell elected President of Gloucester Ringette in
1974.
- (The Pioneers) Gloucester's very first Representative Teams
were the Gloucester, Petites, Tweens and Belles of 1974-75.
The Tweens were coached by (You guessed it!) Lois Kemp and
Eleanor MacQuarrie.
1975
- Don Jamieson elected President of Gloucester Ringette in
1975. Gord Russell of Blackeburn Hamlet took over the reins that
year.
- In March 1975 the very first Provincial Championships
in Ontario were held in Etobicoke, then known as Eringate Ringette.
There were only four regions then. Central/East, North
East, Niagara, and the West. Tournament Structure was a "Double
Knockout". Teams from Eastern and Central Ontario had to compete
against each other for the right to attend. To accomplish
this end, in early March 1975 the very first Regional
Championships in Ontario were held throughout the Province.
Teams from Eastern and Central Ontario came to Earl
Armstrong Arena in Gloucester to find the top team from those
two Regions to attend Provincial Championships in the three age
groups that participated in those days... Petites (8 -
10), Tweens (11 - 13) & Belles (14 - 16). Oshawa
made it a clean sweep, winning all three divisions against Gloucester
and Ajax. Gloucester won the silver medal in all three divisions.
The Pioneers
Officials: Refereeing at those first Regional Championships,
and later in the very first Provincial Championships from Gloucester
were: Bruce Kettles, Ray Seguin and Doug MacQuarrie.

A RINGETTE PLAYER'S PRAYER
Dear Father, as we come to play Ringette, grant us the will
to particiapte to our fullest, as individual players and
team members.
May our goal be to play with spirit and fairness, to the
best of our knowledge and ability.
While our coaches guide and teach our teams, may they receive
respect and encouragement from players and parents alike.
Thank you for the officials whose organizations give us
the opportunity to play Ringette, and as we play, may the
support of our parents add to the fun of the game.
We promise to play Ringette respecting and abiding by the
rules which govern it, and in the true spirit of sportsmanship,
for the appreciation of the sport and the honour of our
team.
Amen.

medal in 1998 as a player in the National Championships to go
along with her Gold Medal Coaching victory in the 1999 Canada
Games. In 1996, Danielle was named Provincial Player of the
Year for the Ontario Ringette Association.
Lyndsay has been involved as a player and coach for 24
years, having both played on a World Championship team and later
coached one. Well that doesn't tell the whole picture. She actually
won 3 National Championships and 2 World Championships as a player.
She has won a Provincial Championship and a Canada Games Gold
Medal as a Coach. As well the team she helped coach to a Provincial
Championship proceeded to and won the National Championship in
1999. Lindsay wasn't able to attend Nationals that year because
of her job, but if you ask me that also makes her a National Championship
coach as well. Lyndsay was Head Coach of Team Canada, winning
the 1996 World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. And in 1998
was Head Coach of Team Finland that defeated Team Canada
in the "EuroTour 1998" Summit Series, 3 games to 2. The matches
between the two world ringette powers, Canada and Finland, were
held throughout Europe in Sweden, Finland, Germany and France.
Are you counting, there have been four World

events. Ohh by the way... She won a Bronze Medal
as a player in the fifth event.

combined with the other 11 communities known as The Regional Municipality
of Ottawa-Carleton into a new mega city with a population of approximately
750,000 to become the fourth largest city in Canada. With
it's population of almost 800,000, it is estimated that Ottawa
will top one million residents within the next couple of years.
Years of slow time amalgamation, annexation and expropriation
of Gloucester by Ottawa ended as we joined Cumberland, Goulbourn,
Kanata, Nepean, Osgoode, Ottawa, Rideau, Rockcliffe Park, West
Carleton and Vanier in this new super city. For some reason they
have decided to call it Ottawa instead of Gloucester.
- The new Mega City of
Ottawa spans 2,757 sq. km and is comprised of 8% urban area
and 92% rural area. From east to west Ottawa is over 110 km.
It stretches from the Kinburn cut off in the west (near the Antrim
Truck Stop)to the border of Cumberland/Rockland (Cannan Road by
the Horse Stables-Double D Ranch) (For
interest's sake, 110 km's X 25 km's equals 2,750 sq km's; and
53 km's X 52 km's equals 2,756 sq km.)
